I’ve been really enjoying apocalypse bringer nyancat.
(Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra: World Conquest Starts with the Civilization of Ruin)
I read one or two of the LNs, and I enjoyed it back then. The anime is starting pretty slowly.
Let’s see, what else is going on?
The Water Magician Up Next: E8
This guy’s a power fantasy isekai. I don’t think I read it, but I think I saw a manga recap at some point on youtube. One thing I thought was funny at first is the guys pupils were too small so he looked like one of those characters who’s crazy and smiling and just waiting for you to turn your back. At this point in the series, it feels like DBZ in the sense that the MC is so powerful they need to constantly find reasons he hasn’t just come in and resolved the issue.
I Was Reincarnated as the 7th Prince so I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability Up Next: S2 E20
Oh yeah, reincarnated as a woodchipper enthusiast who likes magic. I’m not a fan of the woodchipper enthusiast themes, but I love the magic system and watching the MC fold magic in on itself.
Clevatess Up Next: E9
I’m not normally a dark gritty anime fan since I’m no longer 14, but this one is enjoyable.
Overlord Continue
Part of the way through the new overlord movie. Forgot it came out, it’s the holy kingdom arc. Funny, in the last season they talked about how they were allies with the holy kingdom and it’s like “Oh, that’s nice” but now that I’m seeing how they became allies with the holy kingdom it isn’t very nice.
I’m a Noble on the Brink of Ruin, So I Might as Well Try Mastering Magic Continue: E10
I want to finish this one, but I feel like it peaked a few episodes ago. It’s into kingdom building and national politics and I prefer something like The Water Mage where the MC is just a nice guy who beats up bad dudes with isekai powers.
Scooped Up by an S-Rank Adventurer! Up Next: E8
Honestly probably peaked four episodes ago, but I’ll finish the season. It’s not bad, but the arc of “guy who doesn’t know he’s strong is crapped on by his old party but is really strong and his new party appreciates him” is already done.
Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter Start Watching: E1
Haven’t started this one, but I’m planning to. Private tutor was a fun LN series that’s as I remember a comedy about the differences between the guys power and what people think of him and his opinions of others.
Uglymug, Epicfighter Up Next: E8
Great show, everyone should see it. It kind of turns out almost like a spy thriller because everyone is hiding things about themselves from everyone else. Wonderful themes of “It’s not what’s on the outside that counts, true beauty is on the inside”
Kaiju No. 8 Continue
Gotta continue this one.
Anyway, I know nobody really cares, but I wanted to share what I’m watching this season and my thoughts about the ones I picked up.
Watching:
- My Dress-Up Darling - I forgot how much I enjoyed this show. Second season continues right along with no noticeable drop off. 4/5+
- Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra - I like the dark fantasy aspect and how the world/game aspects are based on a strategy game instead of the usual RPG. But, there is not much of a plot yet, the characters have not been that interesting, and the world building is slowing down. 3/5 for now.
- Call of the Night - Another returning series that picked back up with the same energy as before. This season has a good plot driving some character and world building. 4/5
- Secrets of the Silent Witch - The first four episodes were nearly perfect, and I could tell the adoption was being handled with care, but the next four felt very rushed. The quality was still there and nothing specifically was wrong just it did not seem like enough time was allowed for one event or character to be established before it jumped to the next. 4/5
- Reborn as a Vending Machine - I enjoyed the original three light novels and the first season. But this season should never have been made. The pacing, plot, etc. are all really poor. My guess is they are now adopting the web novel and that lacks the polish and fleshing out a light novel would typically add. 2/5
- Cultural Exchange with a Game Center Girl - Its always weird to be a native English speaker watching a subtitled anime from Japan featuring an English speaking character. Sort of doubles the titular cultural exchange. So far its been interesting and fun enough. I worry a bit about the potential age gap relationship, but so far that’s not developed into a real problem. 4/5
Soft Dropped:
- Clevatess - The dark fantasy, high stakes, implied world building depth are all great. I just got really tired of the cliff hangers and constant amping up of drama. Seems like it would be better watched one arc at a time. So I may pick it back up later. 3/5
Dropped:
- Scooped Up by an S-Rank Adventurer! - I know better than to have expected much from this. It was OK at first, but then I found myself “hate watching” it. I’m generally fine with and often enjoy the unaware, overpowered main character trope. But this one doubles down and makes the entire rest of the cast seem utterly stupid as well just so the MC seems smart in comparison. 2/5
- The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princesses - Eh, it seemed okish, just not of interest to me.
To pick up:
- Dan da dan - I enjoyed the first part of the first season, then sort of fell out of watching it. Not sure why. Still intend to pick it back up.
- Kaiju No. 8 - I enjoyed binging this one when the first season aired so plan to do the same here.
- City the animation - Amazon’s video service is trash. Other options… have their own complications, so I hope to catch it all at once later.
We watched the first three episodes of See You Tomorrow at the Food Court over the weekend. It’s, honestly, delightful. I love how it blends moments of humor, inanity, and genuine insight so fluidly.
I could watch these two girls talk about nothing for hours.
I watched Fruits Basket (2019) till episode 6 before dropping it.
It’s decent, but up to where I stopped, it doesn’t stand out from typical romcoms. (perhaps it gets better later?)
I don’t have much time, so even good - but not amazing - anime goes on the chopping block.
While I personally love comedy in general, similar thing happened to me with Asobi Asobase. I dropped at “ass laser episode”. No idea why people like it that much.
Of the ones I’ve been watching this season, City the Animation and The Summer Hikaru Died are easily the standouts. A+ shows for sure. Clevatess has been good, Witch Watch has been decent as well, and Turkey has been “fine”. If I were to assign them letter grades I’d probably give Clevatess an A-, Witch Watch a B-, and Turkey a C. It’s juuuust good enough for me to not drop it, but I don’t really recommend it either.
I want more Kaiju No 8
Currently binging Deca-Dence and thoroughly enjoying it. The basic set-up is fascinating, the world-building is very well done, and the two main characters have great chemistry, and both get satisfying character arcs.
