You could use Molly-FOSS, a fork of the signal client, to use Unifiedpush and receive notifications through a provider like ntfy (selfhostable) or sunup (which uses Mozilla by default)

Signal uses AWS as a backend. It also uses firebase for push notifications by default, meaning Google can tell whenever you get a notification!

The Piefed API is structured very similarly to Lemmy which allowed me to write a simple adaptor for it without changing much of my clients actual code. I think mbin’s API would take a lot longer to adapt.
