Yeah, but the russia and china authoritarian love and glazing sucks.

Niche active communities for sure.
I am also banned from reddit and can’t contribute. You’d imagine that would pull me more towards lemmy, but just getting the novelty of so many new posts makes it enticing even if I am not interacting.
Instagram and tiktok benefit less from its algo imo than they do from its numerous creators. The novelty drives people. It’s complicated I am sure but actively this is what I think about when I reach for these platforms.
I definitely think the trick is having innumerable amount of content.

You won’t believe how many people want good health care over spiritual catharsis.
It’s just a people thing.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Are there any abandoned fediverse communities you'd like to see resurrected?English
4·20 days agoHmmm so the only way to grow is to post on other social media platforms about fediverse?
Very niche communities should generally try to join a more generic community
Yeah, not a bad idea.
Well if anything, at least you can post stuff and have substantial people see it. Perks of being a small place.
Also I am .ee refugee. For now I have home. But I am convinced of joining piefed whenever I create another account.

21·20 days agoMy issue is with the authoritarian governments and their tightly held control over their media. Recently I’ve felt that western news sources have also been very biased and I can’t take anything coming from them completely straight. I’ve even switched sources from legacy media outlets to individual reporters and small boutique media outlets. (YouTubers) They have less ties with the establishment and while they are still biased, they have far more of an objective overview of the situations at hand.
This is different from China and Russia because they control a lot of their social media as well. The great fire wall being infamous. Also the language barrier definitely makes it more difficult to find people organically.
I am also less likely to believe stuff I hear from a country like russia which heavily suppresses freedom of speech and jails protestors as compared to France which doesn’t do the same (or at least to that level).
Plus Putin and xi ping openly flaunt being dictators. There’s too much smoke to be oblivious to something like this.
Also if you believe these men really care about genocide of their people in any terms other than how it affects their status and power, then you are quite mistaken. Because I can say this with a straight face, that no democratically elected leader/politician cares about such issues without worrying about the same, much less so authoritarian dictators.

31·20 days agoI do trust some news coming from China, but for russia it’s just too difficult to give them any credence given my own experience with news outlets that are just government mouthpieces.
Yet, it’s not a complete blackout state like North korea. Telegram has a lot of credible sources or so I’ve heard. They don’t shy away from Russian losses for eg.

So no, it isn’t about being liberal (which I am not).
For me it is personally what keeps me still on reddit.
I love lemmy/piefed for the awesome people, but really feel the lack of niche content.
I want to start my own communities on lemmy, but it is just so hard to keep it going. I don’t have the energy for that. Living life is difficult as it is already. And I don’t want to see my community die.
Also Reddit bans you from upvoting and participating, but you still get personalized ads even after you get banned. LOL
Askhistorians is objectively the only sane history subreddit.
The rest are filled with colonial apologists, genocide deniers and nationalists.

87·21 days agoI dunno that dude.
My problem is not with “evil asian countries”
Tankies love the russian and Chinese governments and take everything they say at face value. (.ml instance owner is pro-russia iirc). They are not socialist or communist, but authoritarians. Support for them is what irks me, not the socialist ideals.

47·21 days agoLol tankies will take everything from Putin and xi and eat it up like it is the eternal truth.
If you can’t admit that, then you are not better than the consumers of said “western state propoganda”. At least they get to think for themselves.

1·21 days ago.zip is good all rounder. I second.
Might be general tribal attitude.
I was banned from reddit for calling out colonial apologia and saying fuck you nazi. They literally banned all my accounts without review. I wasn’t even trying to circumvent the ban with the others.
I think people leave because of the lack of niche communities.
Reddit niche communities are like crack. None of the fandom communities are active here.
Does piefed have good moderation tools?
Have you been to any of the history subreddits or the incel ones or the right wing ones? Or just r/all?
Lol. Reddit is super hateful right now.
One reason I like lemmy is because people are a lot more friendly here.

I am sure you like stuff that people from EU and US like.

Can you make posts/comments criticizing china, russia and the various horrific shit perpetrated by dictators of said country?
My one issue with tankies is that. Otherwise I openly welcome leftist ideas.
