When he sings those songs it is quite language heavy and might not translate well to people who are not fluent in Japanese. Same thing with western fans calling Nichijou surreal at places where there is actually a joke but it is language based so it seems absurd.

I’m curious at the reverse: what are common examples of Western animation humor that would be hard to translate outside of English?

I don’t know specifically about animation humor but some general language based things will not easily translate from English to Japanese.

        • As far as I can tell, Japanese people swear a lot less and their assortment of swearing is quite limited compared to English. I think creative swearing, which is quite common in media, is very hard to translate to Japanese.
        • Japanese poetry is very different and it doesn’t really rhyme in the way we are used to. Translating something that rhymes into Japanese is probably a challenge.

I’m not fluent at all so don’t take my word for it.

I remember there was a Simpson’s joke where Chief Wiggums said something like, “You called the wrong number, this is 912.” But most people outside of America probably won’t know that 911 is the emergency hotline in the USA.

Yeah I’m not fluent at all but trying to get there. I did hear that it’s definitely funnier in Japanese and most of it was lost in translation.
